This series shows the lives of courteasans in the post independence era. over the course of eight episodes, this epic drama series captivated the audiences with its complex characters, outstanding visuals and background music. In this series there are vast number of cast, each with their own complex personality, strength and flaws. From the Mallika Jaan [Manisha Koirala], the Hazoor of Shahi Mahal to the Lajwanti [Richa Chadha] Mallika Jaan’s foster daughter, the heart of Heeramandi Bibbojaan [Aditi Rao Hydari], the bold  Fareedan [Sonakshi Sinha], Waheeda[Sanjeeda Sheikh], the revolutionary lover Tajdar[Taha Shah Badusha] and Alamzeb[Sharmin Segal].

Themes and Messages

The series depicts several themes but the central theme is the pursuit and consequences of power and love. There is also rage and delusions of love and grandeur. Production value

Heeramandi’s sets and costumes set new standards for production quality for series. The gradoise sets portray the post independence era and the stunning visuals takes us back to that time. The aesthetics are out of this world. Heeramandi- promising a cinematic masterpiece.

Impact and Reception

Soon after its release, this series became the most viewed Indian series in the first week of its launch. This series became the centre of mixed reviews. Several writers criticized this series on the basis of exaggeration of sets, costumes and even the storyline. In an interview one of the actress who plays the role of Fareedan in the series called out people for their level of hypocrisy, as they showed love to the American show ‘Bridgerton’ without pointing out its flaws and factual inaccuracies and criticized Heeramandi.

Personal Opinion 

As a fan of period dramas, I was drawn to its aesthetic sets and costumes. The unpredictable complex characters and the grand scale of this series makes it more interesting. For me the story is  not that great as the dialogues were.

Conclusion

Heeramandi transcends the production scale of Indian series and left a lasting legacy for future period drama series. This series redefine the audience expectation for grand scale production. Even after several unpleasant reviews it is still captivating the heart of audience.
